HANOI: A mega-port is being planned for Vietnam’s central city of Da Nang. The first phase of the $1.4 billion development is expected to be completed by 2020; the second and third phases by 2030 and 2050 respectively. Initial construction work will include a breakwater, fairways and technical infrastructures, and will be followed by harbors, traffic infrastructure and warehouses.
The existing Tien Sa Port is operating at its maximum capacity of 10.4 million tons per year and is unable to meet the increasing demands of cargo and warehouse space, according to the contractor Tediport. According to Tediport, the Da Nang port development should see it become an international gateway for passengers, containers and liquid and dry bulk cargo and liquid. The city plans to increase its annual capacity to 12 million tons of cargo.
In July, Vietnam’s government announced plans for a port development in the country’s southern-most province Ca Mau in the Mekong Delta. The port is costing some $2.5 billion according to media reports and would be able to host some of the world’s biggest ships.
