DUBLIN: A crackdown on fuel laundering and smuggling saved the state up to €200 million in 2014, Revenue has said.
The tax authority estimated the value of the blitz on ex-IRA gangs and border criminals after a report by the country’s spending watchdog said that the illegal trade had been virtually wiped out.
Niall Cody, Revenue’s chairman, said that customs officials had been running comprehensive and successful strategies to shut down the underground operations and stop washed diesel being sold in forecourts.
