LONDON: The unnamed individual was held after police found the drugs hidden inside the door of a van on a ferry which arrived at the northern port of Santander from Plymouth. The ecstasy pills were concealed inside eight vacuum-packed containers. Officers also discovered 700 fake Viagra tablets inside the same hollowed-out area of the van’s rear door. The arrest took place following a probe into an organised drug smuggling gang.

A spokesman for Spain’s National Police said: “Investigators discovered a convoy of vehicles driven by a British national inside the ferry which docked at Santander from Plymouth.

“The convoy consisted of a vehicle which was transporting a van which detectives regarded as suspicious.

“After inspecting both, they found a hollowed-out area in the rear door of the van which had been designed to transport illegal substances.”Inside they found 15,954 ecstasy tablets.

“The tablets were inside eight vacuum-packed containers covered with a layer of grease to make it more difficult for sniffer dogs to detect them by their smell.”

The force added in a press release: “In the same secret compartment, the detainee was transporting almost 700 fake pills used for erectile dysfunction.”

The suspect is understood to have been remanded in custody after appearing before an investigating judge in a closed court hearing.
