Custom court sends cell phones’ smuggler on remand

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has sent a suspect, Muhammad Asim, on judicial remand who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle 114 mobile phones worth Rs 1.228 million.

On Wednesday, the investigation officer produced the accused person before the court. After the hearing, the court sent him to jail and directed the investigation officer to complete the investigation and submit a charge sheet until the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, on credible information officials of the custom department intercepted the accused person and during the examination of his bag recovered 114 mobile phones of different brands, including Samsung, Motorola, Huwewi, HTC and mobile phones batteries worth Rs 1,228, 448.

The case was registered by senior preventive officer Muhammad Shafique on violation of Section 16 of the Custom Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) of Section 156 (i)ibid, read with SRO-666 (1)/2006 dated June 28, 2006 and Section 3 (iii) of Import and Export (control) Act, 1950.
