MADRID: In September 2016, the Canary Islands shipped 35,786 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 23,122 tonnes and re-exports reached 7,989 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to about 50,920 tonnes of bananas; the highest figure in a month of September since 2009. This is around 14,312 tonnes more than in the previous month, representing an increase of 28.1%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 30% and a maximum of 45% of the supply available in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in September were Ivory Coast, with 5,824 tonnes, Colombia, with 4,790 tonnes and Costa Rica, with 4,116 tonnes, which together accounted for 64% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 3.3 million Euro, Colombia, with 2.6 million and Costa Rica, with 2.2 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 67% of the total.
So far in 2016, shipments from the Canary Islands have exceeded 289,402 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America have stood at 211,133 tonnes and re-exports have reached 52,275 tonnes, so the available supply has amounted to 448,261 tonnes, 83,250 more than in the same period of 2015. The market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 47% of the supply available in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year are: Ivory Coast, with 52,113 tonnes, Costa Rica, with 52,089 tonnes, and Colombia, with 29,859 tonnes, which together account for 63% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 32.0 million Euro, Costa Rica, with 26.0 million and Colombia, with 16.7 million Euro, were the leading suppliers in terms of value, accounting for 63% of the total.
