U.S. Senator calls for Canada to reverse dairy pricing policy

OTTAWA: U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is urging Canadian officials to reverse a pricing policy that’s designed to discourage Canadian cheesemakers from using imported, ultra-filtered milk from the U.S. in their products.

Schumer says the new pricing policy essentially sets the price of Canada’s products below that of New York’s ultra-filtered milk imports, and he says that hurts farmers in the Empire State.

Schumer met Thursday with Canadian officials. He says the new dairy trade and pricing policies fly directly in the face of trade agreements signed by the two countries.

Schumer noted that New York producers have invested millions in order to be able to export to Canada because they have long enjoyed duty-free access for their ultra-filtered milk product under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
