COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s state owned public bus service has received a record income during the private bus operators’ strike, the government claimed.
According to the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) Ramal Siriwardena, the SLTB has received a record income of more than Rs. 110 million during the private bus operators strike on Friday (02).
The Chairman said it was an increase of Rs. 38 million when compared with a normal day. He said the average income of the SLTB per day was Rs. 72 million and that the earnings on Friday had increased by 60 percent.
Mr. Siriwardena said that the SLTB employees underwent serious difficulties Friday and commended the staff including drivers and conductors for their dedicated service for the public at risk of attacks from the strikers.
He said 128 busses were attacked during the strike and more than 10 passengers had to be hospitalized. The Chairman said the public funds would have to be used to repair the damaged buses.
