Custom Court sends 2 suspects on physical remand in 16,000 litre oil smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Arshad Noor Khan has sent two suspects, Israr Ahmed and Azeem on physical remand until December 28, 2016. The suspects were arrested while attempting to smuggle 16,000 litre non-duty paid high speed diesel.

During the hearing, the Investigation Officer Irfan Ghani produced the suspects before the link court, informing that the officials of the Anti-Smuggling Organization intercepted an oil tanker bearing registration no SWN133 on Super Highway near Toll Plaza Hyderabad on December 23, 2016. The driver of the oil tanker Israr Khan and cleaner Azeem were asked to produce the legal documents of the said oil, but they did not produce any lawful documents regarding the legal import and transportation of the diesel.

The investigation officer said that the oil and tanker were taken into the custody and an FIR was lodged under sections 2 (s) 16 & 157 of the customs act, 1969 read with section 3 (1) of imports & export (control) act, 1950 punishable under clauses (8) (89) of section 156 (1) of the customs act, 1969.

He requested the court to handover the suspects to the Custom Department for further investigation. Therefore, the court granted the physical remand and directed the investigation officer to produce them on the next date of hearing along with progress report.
