Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect involved in tax evasion

KARACHI: Acting Judge of Customs Court Shazia Asif has sent a suspect, Shahryar son of Khalid Mahmood, on physical remand until January 5, 2017. The suspect was absconder and booked in Rs 9.34 million tax evasion case.

During the hearing, the investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and informed that he was absconder and now has been arrested by the efforts of the Customs Department. The investigation officer stated that the Custom Department needs further investigation from the suspect, therefore, the court may granted his physical remand.

After the arguments, court granted his request and sent the accused to physical remand. The court also directed the investigation officer to produce the accused on the next date of hearing along with progress report.

It needs to the pertained here that accused persons namely Asad Aleem, Akbar Khan, Muhammad Ibrahim Khan and Khurram Iqbal are on bail in this case.

According to the prosecution, case was registered by Intelligence Officer Aqib Alam of FBR Intelligence and Investigation in violation of 2 (s) (ii) 16, 32 (1) & (2) 32A, 8, 82 of the customs act 1969, punishable under section 156 (1) (8) (9) (14) (14A) & 156 (2) ibid read with section 3, 6, 7A, 33, 34 of the sale tax act 1990 further read with section 148 of the Income Tax Ordinance.
