ISLAMABAD: Setting aside the conviction of State Minister Abid Sher Ali’s brother Amir Sher Ali, the Supreme Court has acquitted him of the charges of corruption, power abuse and embezzlement of public money.

Headed by Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, a three-member SC bench made the decision after hearing both the sides. Earlier, the law officers appeared in the court and alleged that the accused was involved in acquisition of properties, money and gains and he misused his power when he was mayor.

The prosecution said that investigating officer Inspector Abdul Latif made a statement that accused had not acquired any property during his mayorship, and only an amount of half million USD had been deposited in his foreign currency account during that period.

Assisted by Advocate Mian Moazzam Habib, Advocate Akram Sheikh opposed the arguments the prosecution arguing that that Amir Sher Ali had not acquired a single penny, cash or property through illegal means. He contended that the prosecution had also failed to prove him guilty that he misused his office. Advocate Sheikh also showed bank statement of foreign currency account and read over the statement of Mohsin Javed, Manager of Soneri Bank, who was a prosecution witness, wherein he deposed that he had never seen any unusual transaction in the account during mayorship of Amir Sher Ali. However, the court acquitted the accused of the charges.
