KARACHI: Thousands of containers have been stuck at the different ports of the country owing to closure of Afghan border, which would be opened for just two days in a week.
Around 1,285 Afghan Transit Trade (ATT) containers have been blocked at Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT), 1800 have been stuck at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), 1,500 containers at Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT), while 5,00 containers have been stuck at South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT).
Similarly, as many as 1,000 containers have been stuck up at Chaman border and as many containers have been blocked at Torkham border.
This stuck-up situation is causing a massive loss to the national economy. It is pertinent to mention here that over 70 percent of the total goods exported to Afghanistan are smuggled back to Pakistan through different points on border.
