OTTAWA: Another call for Canada to step its game up when it comes to producing clean energy solutions.CEC Policy Director Dan Woynillowicz noted China, for example, has emerged as a dominant player in the low-carbon market.
“They’ve really doubled-down on electric cars for several reasons,” he started. “One is that they need to clean up the air population that is choking their big cities, second is they want to reduce their oil import bill and third is they actually believe they can be world-leaders in manufacturing electric cars.”
“Even if you look at markets like India, where it tends to be middle and upper-class people who have the ability to buy a vehicle, they like to follow the trends that they see in Europe or North America so we’re seeing a lot of interest in India for electric vehicles as well,” said Woynillowicz.
He explained even Shell and BP are increasingly investing in renewables.
“When people see that oil companies are beginning to shift in this direction, I think that sends an important signal that overall, around the world, we’re going to be heading in that direction.
Walmart, Apple and Google are also pushing to be 100 percent green, so he argued the economics must work.
