Karachi University moves SHC against over Rs34m tax recovery notice

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) directed officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to file their comments on a constitutional petition filed by M/s University of Karachi (KU) against a show-cause notice for recovery of Rs34,337,500.

A two-member bench heard the matter on Tuesday’s hearing.

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner stated that Assistant Commissioner Inland Revenue had proposed to be levied penalty for Rs2,500 per day for non-filing of withholding tax monthly statement since the period July 2014 to June 2015 in total amounting Rs34, 337, 500 vide notice under Section 182 (2) read with Section 165 of the Income Tax Ordinance.

Counsel argued that he has filed reply; however, officials of the FBR did not satisfy and directed the petitioner to submit above mentioned amount.
