Customs Court approves bail of suspect involved in currency smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted bail to suspect namely Sami Ullah Shaikh son of Shamuddin, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth millions of rupees during the raid at Jinnah International Airport Karachi.

On Friday, counsel for the above mentioned suspects appeared before the court and argued that applicant is innocent and falsely implicated in this case, accused declared the currency before the customs but he was falsely implicated in this case. The counsel argued that every outgoing passenger is allowed to take within $10,000 and the excess amount is only $13650 and considering the excess amount, the maximum punishment is not likely to be awarded in this case.

However, Ashiq Ali Anwar Rana, special prosecutor for Customs department opposed this bail application on the ground that the recovery has been made from the possession of applicant but he admitted that accused is entitled to take currency up to the limit of $ 10,000.

Earlier, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and submitted that customs staff on suspicion intercepted the above mentioned suspect at the departure of airport and asked him to provide travel documents.

After collecting the documents, the staff thoroughly checked his luggage and during the search of his luggage, customs officials found $650, 78,755 Dirham hidden as wrapped in the cloths of the passengers.

Investigation officer further informed the court that suspect was travelling to Dubai through Flydubai Airline and after formalities, customs officials seized said foreign currency and arrested the accused.
