Tax evasion: Customs Court seeks comments on acquittal petition

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed counsel for the Customs department to submit comments on petition under section 265K for acquittal filed by suspect Noman Abdul Rauf son of Abdul Sattar, ex-employee of M/s AMI Pakistan Limited, who was booked in several cases of mega tax evasion.

During Monday’s hearing, counsels for the accused person and Customs department appeared before the court and sought further time for preparation; therefore, the court granted time and adjourned the matter.

Earlier, counsel for the accused person filed petition under section 265K and argued that prosecution has not produced any concrete evidence against his client; therefore, the court may acquit him due to lake of evidence.

During hearing, the investigation officer appeared before the court and tendered unconditionally apology and left himself on the mercy of the court; therefore, the court granted his apology and directed him to complete investigations according with law.

According to the prosecution, the cases were registered against accused in violation of section 16, 32 (1), 32 (2), 32A, 79 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses 9, 14, 14-A, and 46 of section 156 (1) of the customs act, 1969 read with section 156 (1) of the Customs Act, 1969 read with Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
