KARACHI: The sugar mill owners have again urged Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain to allow the export of 633,000 tonnes of surplus sugar, saying the country had 3.1 million metric tonnes of stocks as of July 31.

The sugar mill owners said in a letter that the country’s average monthly sugar consumption stood at 564,196 metric tonnes. They said stocks would include 1.197 million metric tonnes of surplus sugar at the start of the next crushing season.

The letter said the sugar industry faced the challenge of holding large stocks, while unsold sugar had caused a severe shortage of funds for mills. The mill owners urged the government to allow the surplus stock to be exported within one month of the start of the crushing season.
