Customs Court approves bail of suspects booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved interim bail of suspects namely S. Muhammad Shafiq son of Khuda Nazar and Azizullah son of Abdul, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 11,794 kilogram betel nuts.

On August 24, 2018, counsel for the above mentioned suspects filed bail petition and argued that petitioners were falsely implicated in this case and is ready to face trail, therefore, court may grant them bail, after hearing the arguments court granted him bail against the surety of Rs2,00,000 and directed them to appear on next date of hearing for conformation of bail or otherwise.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted Hino truck bearing registration number TLG-919 and during the search, officials recovered 11,794 kilogram betel nuts from the truck, at the spot, officials asked them to produce legal documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents. Therefore, after the formalities, the said goods along with truck and accused were taken into custody.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against above mentioned suspects for violation of under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
