Canada:Customs and Border Protection officers in Buffalo seized around 44 lbs of marijuana coming into the U.S. from Canada via a commercial vehicle.

“The officers were taking a look at these boxes. Secondary search revealed more wrapped bundled of marijuana coming from Canada,” said Chief CBP Officer Aaron Bowker.

This seizure comes after 78 lbs of marijuana was located earlier this week, also from a commercial shipment.

All told, CBP officers have seized 145 lbs of marijuana in the last two weeks; a significant spike in usual seizure quantities.

These large-scale busts come less than two months before our Canada officially legalizes recreational marijuana.

It’s a change CBP officers have said they’re prepared for. However this new law has the potential to keep officers extra busy at the border.

“Criminal organizations are always going to try and make a profit somehow. So if they have easier access to something and they can make more money here because it’s still illegal, obviously it’s a concern, yes. It’s something we’re ready for, the officers are aware that it’s being legalized and we’re going to continue to be on the lookout for it,” Chief Bowker told News 4.
