In preparation for the world Expo 2020 and the FIFA tournament in Qatar in 2022, RAK Ports in the UAE has ramped up capacity to accommodate shipments of material and cargo, and, in anticipation of more tourists coming to visit the emirates by water, built a cruise ship terminal.

The ports in the emirate of Ras al Khaimah (RAK), located in the very northeastern tip of the emirates and managed by RAK Ports, have been upgraded to increase shipments from the construction industry that is currently preparing for the world Expo 2020 and the FIFA tournament in Qatar in 2022.

Having traditionally benefitted from the nearby Stevin Rock limestone quarry cargo export over the past years, RAK Ports has completed several upgrade programmes.

First, Saqr bulk port, which has served the construction industry with an annual throughput of 55 million tonnes for the Gulf, African, and Indian markets in the past years, has received two deeper and longer outer bulk berths in the past year. While having an inner draught of 12.5 m, with berths handling Panamax vessels, the new outer berths now cater to Capesize vessels with 18 m draught.
