Customs Court approves remand of suspect in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Waqas Noor to customs department on physical remand in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts.

On 7 October 2019, investigation officer of Intelligence and Investigation FBR submitted first information report (FIR) and also produced the above-mentioned suspect and informed that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted Toyota Hilux pickup (double cabin) Vigo champ bearing registration number: KU-8840 model 2016 and Toyota Hilux Pickup (double cabin) bearing registration number KV-6366.

He disclosed that during the search they recovered 750 kg non-duty paid foreign origin betel nuts (areca), 220,500 pouches of Safina Indian gutka manufactured by Dinesh Pouches Ltd, 36,000 pouches pan parag One 2 One gutkha packed in UAE and other contraband goods from these vehicles.

He submitted that during the investigation, it is proved without any shadow of double that the accused persons along with other associates-in-crime are involved in the smuggling of foreign origin betel nuts and gutka and thus violated the customs laws, therefore, first information report was lodged and suspect was arrested.

After the hearing, court took FIR into court record and sent suspect to customs department on physical remand. Court also directed investigation officer to complete investigation and produce above mentioned suspect on next date of hearing.
