Customs Court approves remand of suspect $450,000 smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Muhammad Islam son of Muhammad Ishaque to customs department on physical remand, who was nominated in a case of smuggling 04.4 kilograms gold, US$ 450,000 s and 255 UAE dirham from Sukkur to Karachi.
On 2 January 2020, investigation officer of customs preventive submitted first information report (FIR) and also produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that customs preventive intercepted two passengers namely Muhammad Islam and Anahita Irani daughter of Sohrab Jamshad Irani, who introduced themselves as owners of the cargo but could not provide any legal documents as to the reason of carrying huge amounts of USD and gold.
He further submitted that later the passengers stated that they were carrying this currency and the gold on behalf of Sheherzade Jewelers but did not provide any lawful documents.
Investigation officer said that during the search, customs officials found 04.4 kilograms gold valuing to Rs 50,000,000. US$ 450,000 valuing in Pakistan rupees 69,907,500 and 255 UAE dirham valuing of Rs. 10,787 and total valuing of Rs. 119,918,287.
He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation, therefore, court may sent suspect to physical remand, after the hearing, court sent him back to customs department and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.
It needs to be mentioned here that the above mentioned lady’s name is mentioned in first information report and his roll, however, neither she was produced nor mentioned her name in remand paper.
