SHC calls comments from NAB officials on bail petition in sales tax refund case

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) directed investigation officer and special prosecutor of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file their comprehensive comments on a bail petition filed by suspect  Irfan in a case of sales taxes refund scam.

On 7 January 2020, during the hearing, the court observed that after National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Ordinance amendment, now NAB cannot carry out cases related to sales taxes, income tax etc.

Zahid Baladi, special prosecutor for NAB, argued that he came to know the same which was observed by the court, however, he needs to consult with NAB officials and then he would be able to guide the court for this matter, therefore, the court may grant time. After the hearing, the court adjourned the matter and directed them to file their comments on next date of hearing.

Counsel for the applicant argued that his client was booked in sales tax fraud case in which co-accused were released on bail granted by the Sindh High Court (SHC), however, after amendment in National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, NAB cannot investigate sales tax or income tax fraud cases, therefore, court may restrain NAB officials from carrying investigation and set aside case proceedings.

After the hearing, court adjourned the matter for next date of hearing and called comments from NAB officials.
