Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect in Sweet Supari smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect namely Irshan Khan son of Wazir Muhammad and sent him to customs lock-up, who was arrested in a case of attempting to huge quantity of Sweet Supari and other contraband goods.

On 4 July 2020, investigation officer of Customs Enforcement and Compliance produced the above mentioned suspect and informed the court that on an actionable information, customs team raided at godown situated at plot no M-150/A 2 Jahanabad, Mewashah, Karachi and recovered 288 gunny bags and 86 cartons containing Sweet Supari assorted brand total weighing 16,525 kg valuing of Rs16,525,000. 859 cartons of assorted brand assorted glass ware (crockery) made in Iran valuing of Rs1,520,50. 293 gunny bags of assorted weight containing foreign origin betel nuts 17,610 kgs, 465 pp bags of assorted weight containing F/O betel nuts 11,200 kgs and others contraband goods total value of seized goods is Rs63,855,550.

He submitted that after the formalities, customs officials seized the above mentioned goods and arrested manager Irshan Khan, however, for arrest of Muhammad Nauman Memon and other financer, abettors, associates, prosecution needs his further physical remand, therefore, court may grant his remand.

After the hearing, court granted his physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A , 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
