MULTAN: Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Dera Ghazi Khan Field Intelligence Unit (FIU) in a joint action has foiled an attempt to smuggle five metric tonnes of iodine under Afghan Transit Trade Agreement.
Sources told Customs Today that Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation FIU Dera Ghazi Khan has conducted the joint operation with border military police. Customs Intelligence received credible information that a consignment being shipped from UAE and destined for Afghanistan was suspected to contain contraband goods.

Sources informed Customs Today that “Since the goods were bound for Afghanistan, under Transit Trade Agreement the intelligence was shared with other law enforcement agencies to foil any attempt of smuggling. The enroute movement was closely monitored from Dera Ghazi Khan to to avoid any enroute pilferage.”
Anti-Narcotics Force has estimated that the seized iodine could have potentially produced 4.5 metric tonnes of synthetic drug namely methamphetamine, which according to UNODC survey report has an international market value of millions.
This unprecedented operation has successfully averted the illicit movement of Millions of US Dollars from going into the hands of criminal syndicates. The seizure has immense international impact and shows Pakistan’s commitment with the charter of FATF. Further actions were under process.
