LAHORE: Carpet Training Institute(CTI) Chairperson Pervez Hanif asked the concerned ministries and agencies to review their role in promoting exports besides this, appealing to Prime Minister Imran Khan for appointing authorized focal persons to raise awareness about the problems of manufacturers and exporters. In a statement issued today, Pervez Hanif said the embassies should only have commercial attachés from the relevant sector.

He said that until a decade and a half ago, Pakistan’s Exports of handmade carpets were at their peak, but instead of increasing, they declined over time and today they are at a much lower level than their rivals.

“The government has been repeatedly informed of the reasons for the decline in exports, but unfortunately no attention has been paid to it,” he added. He said that handloom carpet weaving skills were becoming scarce in Pakistan mainly due to declining exports of handmade carpets and lack of any appreciation or support from the government. “If the government sponsors, its exports can be made attractive,” he added.

Pervez Hanif said that the government should introduce a policy of assigning responsibilities to embassies for the promotion of exports and after receiving information on import trends in different countries through embassies, suggestions should be sent to the concerned ministries, departments and stakeholders. “At the same time, a coordinated mechanism should be set up for liaison of foreign importers with Pakistani exporters,” he concluded.
