LAHORE: On direction of Member Pakistan Customs Mukaram Jah Ansari and Chief Collector Enforcement Mubashar Baig, the Lahore Customs team, under the supervision of Collector Enforcement Ali Abbas Gardazi, carried out a highly successful crackdown in the Model Town and Wapda Town areas of Lahore.
During the operation, a substantial quantity of valuable foreign origin cigarettes, amounting to more than Rs15 million, was seized.
The enforcement team, known as the Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO), acted upon intelligence reports suggesting illegal activities related to the sale and distribution of contraband cigarettes. Under the directives of high-ranking officials, ASO officials meticulously planned and executed the operation, ensuring a swift and efficient crackdown on the targeted areas.
The raid, which took place early morning on June 5, saw a significant deployment of ASO personnel who thoroughly searched various shops and storage facilities suspected of housing illicit goods. The joint efforts of the team led to the successful recovery of a substantial quantity of foreign origin cigarettes, including well-known brands that are highly sought after by consumers.
The seized cigarettes, valued at more than Rs15 million, are believed to have been smuggled into the country without the necessary customs clearance, evading the associated taxes and duties.
The recovered goods, with their foreign origin, represent a significant loss to the national exchequer and the legitimate tobacco industry.
Ali Abbas Gardazi, the Collector Enforcement, expressed his satisfaction with the operation’s outcome and praised the efforts of his team in successfully executing the crackdown. He emphasized the commitment of the Lahore Customs to curb smuggling activities and protect the interests of the country and its lawful businesses.
The seized cigarettes will be securely stored as evidence for legal proceedings against those involved in the illegal trade.
