For companies operating on a regular tax year, the deadline for filing the return of income for the tax year 2024 is on or before December 31, 2024. This extension offers companies additional time to compile and submit their financial information accurately.

However, for companies with a special tax year, the return filing deadline is earlier, on or before September 30, 2024. This distinction recognizes the unique reporting requirements for companies with fiscal years that differ from the standard calendar year.

The FBR said the definition of a tax year, explaining that it is a period of twelve months concluding on the 30th day of June – corresponding to the financial year. The tax year aligns with the calendar year in which the aforementioned date falls. For instance, tax year 2024 covers the period from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.

Additionally, the concept of a special tax year was elucidated, indicating that it represents any twelve-month period denoted by the calendar year relevant to the normal tax year in which the closing date of the special tax year falls. For example, if a special tax year concludes on December 31, 2023, it will be denoted by the calendar year 2024. Similarly, a special tax year from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023, will be denoted by the calendar year 2024.

The notification from the FBR serves as a crucial guide for individuals, AOPs, and companies to plan and prepare for the upcoming tax year. It emphasizes the importance of adherence to deadlines and accurate filing, encouraging a transparent and efficient taxation process.

The announcement also underscores the FBR’s commitment to providing clear guidelines and ensuring a smooth and organized tax filing process for all entities falling under its purview. As the tax season approaches, taxpayers are advised to stay informed and comply with the outlined deadlines to avoid any potential penalties or complications in the future.
