 Islamabad Customs foils bid to smuggle IPhones from airport

ISLAMABAD: Customs officials deputed at Islamabad Airport successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle non-duty paid iPhones of worth Rs 2.5 million in an action.

Under the leadership of Collector Islamabad Customs Naveed Elahi, a crackdown on smugglers was initiated on the basis of secret information received from the source and Collector directed the staff to take action against any smuggling attempt. Customs special team was formed led by Inspector Faraz to intercept smuggling goods after receiving said information.

Acting on received information, the team examined the luggage of a suspected passenger arriving from Sharjah on Flight No. PK-52. Customs staff found suspicious items in the luggage of passenger, prompting a thorough examination that resulted in the discovery of 68 iPhones of various models.

The accused was arrested and Customs registered a criminal case against them for smuggling non-duty paid phones under Customs act 1969. Customs teams identified arrested accuse as Riaz-ul Haq.

The seized mobile phones, valued at Rs 2.5 million, are now in custody, and the accused is on physical remand for further investigation. Collector Naveed Elahi commended the airport customs staff’s performance and urged continued vigilance against smugglers at Islamabad Airport.
