Pakistan eyes new agricultural, food export opportunities in China

SHANGHAI: Pakistan is seeking to expand its agricultural and food exports to China by identifying new high-potential product categories, officials said at the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, which concludes today (Monday).

According to a news report, Pakistan’s Deputy Consul General in Shanghai, Muhammad Atif, said the country currently exports five major products to China — rice, sesame seeds, seafood, fruits and vegetables, and boiled beef and dry fruits. However, he noted that new export opportunities were being explored in sectors such as maize and poultry, including chicken feet, with trade protocols now in the final stages.

Pakistan’s participation at this year’s expo included 20 enterprises under the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), along with several privately represented firms. Atif said that while Pakistan’s official pavilion space was limited, the commercial importance of the CIIE had led more companies to invest independently in showcasing their products.

Two Pakistani firms, Hemani Herbal and Winza, were recognized for their strong performances in previous editions. Hemani Herbal, which exports to more than 85 countries, showcased over 1,800 natural and wellness products at the event.

“At CIIE, companies like Hemani and Winza have shown how Pakistani brands can compete globally through quality, innovation, and branding,” Atif said. “We are confident that many more success stories will follow as Pakistan continues to diversify its exports and deepen agricultural cooperation with China.”

China remains Pakistan’s largest trading partner, though exports to the country remain concentrated in a few agricultural categories. The government aims to broaden this base under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework to enhance trade balance and promote value-added exports.
