GWADAR: Pakistan’s Gwadar Port handled its first diverted international cargo shipment for May on Monday, as regional maritime disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz continue to reroute trade flows.

Port authorities said the vessel, MV Sho-Long, arrived carrying 16,077 metric tonnes of transhipment cargo, including over 13,000 packages of Chinese-origin industrial equipment and pipes.

The shipment had been scheduled for Kuwait but was redirected due to ongoing tensions affecting shipping routes.

Chairman of Gwadar Port Noor-ul-Haq Baloch said the port recorded four transhipment vessels in April 2026, indicating increased reliance on Gwadar during disruptions in traditional routes.

He said port operations, including berthing, cargo handling and documentation, are being managed to facilitate diverted shipments and maintain continuity in trade.

Officials said the diversion reflects a shift in cargo movement patterns, with Gwadar being used as an alternative route for regional trade.
