A solemn Independence Day ceremony was held at the State Bank of Pakistan in Karachi, where Governor Jamil Ahmed hoisted the national flag.

Speaking at the ceremony, the governor said Pakistan must overcome the obstacles it faces and put the country firmly on the path of development. He called on citizens to fulfil their responsibilities with national spirit and work collectively to address the challenges confronting the country.

Economy moving in right direction

Jamil Ahmed said the national economy is moving in the right direction, noting that remittances and foreign exchange reserves are increasing.

He said Pakistan’s economic growth rate stood at 3.6% during fiscal year 2026. However, he cautioned that changes in the global economy continue to pose significant challenges for the country.

The governor said increasing production, boosting exports and creating employment opportunities are essential to making economic stability sustainable.

Exports key to sustainable development

Jamil Ahmed stressed that promoting exports is crucial for putting Pakistan on the path of sustainable economic development.

He called for greater national unity to deal with the challenges facing the country and urged stakeholders to fulfil their responsibilities with a strong sense of national spirit.

According to the governor, higher domestic production combined with increased exports and employment generation can provide a stronger and more sustainable foundation for economic stability.

State Bank aims for future-ready financial system

The State Bank governor said the institution is working to align Pakistan’s financial system with the requirements of the future.

He said the goal is to make the country’s financial system future-oriented and secure, while ensuring that every segment of society has access to financial services.

Jamil Ahmed also highlighted the importance of the State Bank’s role in building a strong and prosperous Pakistan.

Investment opportunities

The governor said efforts are also being made to bring investment opportunities within the reach of ordinary citizens. He reiterated that expanding access to the financial system across all segments of society remains a key objective.

Jamil Ahmed said financial inclusion, a secure banking system and greater investment opportunities can help support broader economic participation.

Speaking about the broader meaning of independence, the State Bank governor said freedom is not limited to political independence.

He stressed that freedom also involves upholding the law and fulfilling responsibilities towards the country and society.

Jamil Ahmed said Pakistan must collectively work to overcome its challenges and continue moving towards development, prosperity and sustainable economic stability.
