ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has confirmed that taxpayers are facing intermittent technical problems on its IRIS portal, as thousands attempt to file income tax returns and wealth statements for Tax Year 2026 ahead of the looming deadline.
In an official statement posted on its social media handle, FBR said its technical teams were actively working to resolve the disruption and would issue an update once the issue is fixed.
The acknowledgement came after the Lahore Tax Bar Association (LTBA PILC) reported that the IRIS system failed to function smoothly for taxpayers on Tuesday, September 15, as the filing deadline approached.
LTBA PILC Chairman Waheed Butt said taxpayers, tax consultants, and lawyers across the country had been facing persistent technical glitches, delays, and disruptions on the portal, making it extremely difficult to complete the filing process within the stipulated time frame.
Butt called on the IT wing of FBR to seriously address the issue and closely monitor the performance of the portal for taxpayers, consultants, and lawyers to prevent further delays in the filing process.
He noted that the recurring malfunctioning of the IRIS system was placing an undue burden on compliant taxpayers and risked penalising them for delays caused entirely by the tax authority’s own technical shortcomings.
He urged the IT wing to identify the root causes of the poor performance of the system, upgrade its server capacity and response infrastructure, and ensure the portal can withstand the surge in traffic that typically occurs as filing deadlines near.
The LTBA PILC chairman also called on FBR to consider extending the filing deadline for Tax Year 2026 in view of the ongoing technical issues, to ensure no genuine taxpayer is penalised for circumstances beyond their control.
