Rs10m under-invoicing: Appraisement-West detects tax evasion in 100-plus consignments of IDEAS-2014

KARACHI: The Appraising Intelligence Branch (AIB) of Model Customs Collectorate-MCC of Appraisement (West) detected around Rs10 million short recovery in terms of under-invoicing in more than 100 consignments, which brought for International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS-2014), which was held in Karachi from December 1-4.

According to details, more than 100consignments consisting of “Tents with Standard Accessories” were imported and cleared for the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar “IDEAS-2014, Pakistan  as temporary importation meant for subsequent re-exportation after the exhibition as provided under Standing Order No. 01/2014 (Appg).

Subsequently, the information was received that one of the containers, which were cleared, vide GD No. KEAP-HC-5704-27-11-2014 has illegally been removed from the vicinity/premises of the exhibition and disposed of locally without proper documentation and payment of leviable duty and taxes thereon.

In order to confirm the veracity of information, the AIB/R&D Branch of MCC-Appraisement West through a letter was asked the M/s Agility Fairs & Events Logistics to confirm the current status of goods.

Afterwards, the M/s Agility have responded through letter that they have retained the consignments in terms of Clause (P) of the Standing Order and provided GDs along with relevant import documents/payment challans as per following details KEAP-HC-5433-12-11-2014 containing tent with standard accessories, weight 23810Kg; KEAP-HC-5434-12-11-2014 containing tent frame with all standard accessories having weight 21910Kilogram; KEAP-HC-5471-14-11-2014 containing tent fabric having weight of 9350Kg; KEAP-HC-5604-21-11-2014 consisted of tent with standard accessories having weight of 5380Kg and KEAP-HC-5704-27-11-2014 consisted of tent with standard accessories having weight of 24360Kg.

The Collector-MCC Appraisement (West) Muhammad Saleem nominated Principal Appraiser Ahmed Nawaz and appraiser Sher Khan for examining the import consignments during IDEAS-2014 and Principal Appraiser Mehmood-ur-Rehman and appraiser Gohar Ahmed to check the consignments at the time of re-export.

The sources informed Customs Today that the recovery involving Rs10million approximately is being under-process and would be recovered soon.

They further said that the Chief Collector-Appraisement (South) Nasir Masroor Ahmed and Collector-MCC Appraisement (West) have lauded the efforts of AIB/R&D officials in detecting around Rs10million under-invoicing during the examination of the consignments.
