LONDON: A dead whale spotted offshore Saturday by an Oceanic Society whale watching expedition landed on a Pacifica beach Sunday.
Local resident and marine biologist Izzy Szczepaniak saw the male, about 40-foot humpback whale being scavenged by three blue sharks that were taking off big chunks of the whale’s head and tongue about five miles offshore of the Pacifica pier. The next day at about 6:30 a.m., the same whale, identified by its unique barnacle pattern, washed up on the 400 block of Esplanade Avenue. City officials are trying to get the whale removed as expeditiously as possible, a police department press release states. In the meantime, Marine Mammal Center scientists are studying the animal.
“The necropsy revealed injuries consistent with blunt trauma but they are not certain about the cause of death,” Szczepaniak said.
The Marine Mammal Center confirmed a 38-foot humpback whale carcass is currently located at Pacific Manor Beach. The Center received initial reports from a member of the public early in the morning on Sunday, August 2. Around 4 p.m. the same day, scientists from The Marine Mammal Center and The California Academy of Sciences arrived on the scene to perform a partial necropsy to try to determine cause of death and collect samples.
