NEW YORK: A massive galaxy called SDP.81 has been discovered by scientists with utmost precision at the Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) observatory with the assistance of a natural phenomenon in the universe called gravitational lensing. This galaxy is located in the constellation Hydra, 11.7 billion light-years from Earth.
The phenomena of gravitational lens is called ‘natural telescope’, it implies that strong gravitational fields in the universe act as lenses and thus, bend light as it travels through the cosmos which allows the scientists to capture a glimpse of what might have remained invisible without this lens impact.
The scientists have confirmed that this monstrous galaxy, SDP.81 is forming stars at a rate hundreds to thousands of times faster than the time taken for star formation in the Milky Way. The images show that this galaxy possessed massive clumps of stars nearly 200 light-years across.
The images also reveal the existence of a super massive black hole, 4 billion light-years away, at the center of the galaxy which is acting as a gravitational lens.
