DUBAI: Four African drug smugglers were arrested at Abu Dhabi International Airport as they were attempted to smuggle a total of 18 kilograms of cocaine, in four separate cases this year.
Drugs were hidden in makeup cases, shampoo bottles, secret compartments in luggage and in ingested capsules.
The director of criminal investigation at Abu Dhabi customs, Colonel Rashid Mohammed Bourshid, said all four smugglers came from a suspect drug smuggling route from a latino country, and were transiting through Abu Dhabi on their way to various other destinations.
He added that one of the suspects was apprehended as he showed signs of illness and was subjected to detailed inspection.
All four suspects confessed during interrogations to attempting to smuggle narcotic substances. They were referred to public prosecution.
The head of the anti-narcotics section at the CID, Colonel Sultan Al Darmaki, said the suspects were stopped and inspected upon showing signs of nervousness.
