Suspect in 3.153kg gold smuggling case to appear before adjudication today

LAHORE: The Collectorate of Customs Adjudication issued show-cause notice in Rs 3.135 kg gold worth Rs 12. 5 million contravention case and ordered the accused to appear before the Collector of Customs Adjudication Wednesday (today).

The Customs Adjudication said that in view of the facts provided by the Customs Preventive, it is evident that a deliberate attempt has been made to smuggle the gold jewelry ornaments in the country without the payment of taxes and duties.

The Collectorate has given the accused seven days to appear before the collector of the Adjudication and explain the reason as to why the gold jewelry was transported in the country without the payment of duties and taxes. The Collectorate of Adjudication warned the accused to appear before the collector in person or through a counsel on or before December 10 and in case of the failure in this regard, the matter will be decided on the basis of evidences and material available on the record.

The MCC Preventives authorities intercepted accused Irfan Tariq at the Allama Iqbal International Airport. The customs officials including Amjad Ali Ch, Sajad Bukhari, Nazir Ahmad and Muhammad Botta caught the accused passenger Irfan Tariq of Lahore Cantt red-handed with gold worth Rs 12. 5 million while misusing green channel at the Allama Iqbal International Airport.

The passenger was coming from Dubai to Lahore from a Shaheen Airline flight No-767. Irfan Tariq was said to have been found with the gold jewelry in his under-garment very tactfully.

The customs authorities upon suspicion undertook through search of the accused before Deputy Collector of Customs Usman Bajwa and recovered gold ornaments in the presence of two witnesses.

The gold ornaments were packed in transparent packets around the passenger body with the help of restraint belt and anklet. The accused allegedly failed to satisfy the customs authorities as he could not produce documents of duty clearance of the gold. The customs authorities had also registered a case under Customs Act 1969 against the accused.
