LONDON: Acer is back on Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform after the company introduced the Liquid M220 smartphone today. As we have become used to, the handset is a modest device that runs Windows Phone 8.1, but arguably the most interesting thing is that Acer confirmed the Liquid M220 will be upgradeable to Windows 10 Mobile when the software lands this fall.
In terms of looks and specs the Acer Liquid M220 will be familiar to those who have followed the Windows platform recently. That means the device is affordable and carries low end specs. Firstly, it is hardly the most striking device out there, and even for a bargain $79.99 there are Microsoft Lumia devices that are much nicer in the looks department.
It is the $79.99 price tag that makes the Liquid M220 hard to argue against in any aspect, its affordability excuses its shortcomings. They (those pesky shortcomings) are plentiful of course and the specs of the M220 hardly leap off the page, but again they weren’t exactly meant to. The device comes with a 4-inch 480p display, a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a micro SD card slot, and a 5MP (rear) and 2MP (front) camera configuration.
Acer’s choice to opt for 1GB of RAM means the Liquid M220 is better equipped to deal with Windows 10 Mobile than similarly priced devices that have 512MB of RAM (these will have Win 10 in a limited capacity). At the moment the Acer Liquid M220 is available in the Microsoft Store in the United States, Canada, and Russia. In the U.S. customers will be given a free pair of Nokia earphones when they purchase the Liquid M220.
