Acer prefers profitability to PC shipment growth, says Stan Shih

Acer will focus on developing product lines that will benefit its business development and will give up the policy of ramping up shipments at the expense of profitability, according to company founder Stan Shih.

Shih made the remarks amid growing concerns about the company’s business prospects as the notebook vendor has said that it expects its notebook shipments to stay flat in 2015 as compared to the previous year during which its shipments suffered a decline.

Since the growth dynamics for the entire industry is relatively weak at the moment, the pursuit of shipment growth will come merely at the expense of profitability, which should not be the way of doing business, Shih said.

Acer is the sole vendor out of the global top-five brands that saw its shipments decline in 2014, according to data compiled IDC.

Acer will try to make a breakthrough via strengthening its product portfolio, including the launch of 2-in-1 models, Chromebooks and gaming notebooks, according to company CEO Jason Chen, referring to the company’s product event held in New York recently.

Acer will strive to maintain its top-vendor ranking in the Chromebook segment with a 40% share, and Chromebooks will account for an even higher portion of Acer’s total notebook shipments in 2015 as compared to 15-20% of a year earlier, according to the company.
