KARACHI: Additional Collector (ADC) of Air Fright Unit (AFU), Model Customs Collectorate- MCC (Preventive) Dr Tahir Qureshi through a letter has briefed Collector of Customs Adjudication-I Dr Farid Iqbal Qureshi about the case in which an NGO “Health and Social Welfare Association” (HASWA) through fake import documents imported a huge quantity of medicines, which was detected by the Air Freight Unit (AFU) of JIAP.
In the letter, the ADC-AFU informed the Collector of Customs Adjudication-I that the Customs officials during examination detected a consignment of medicines imported on fake documents by NGO “Health and Social Welfare Association (HASWA).
The ADC-AFU further informed the Collector, Adjudication-I that upon scrutinizing the import data of the M/s Health and Social Welfare Association (HASWA) it was come into the notice that the said importer wax importing medicines on fake documents for last two years.
“Later, the Air Freight Unit (AFU) through the Pakistan Consulate in Manchester sent a letter to “World in Need”, a charitable organization in United Kingdom (UK) in order to verify the authenticity of the NGO Health and Social Welfare Association (HASWA), as the NGO was using its license in clearing the medicine consignments”, letter stated.
It is pertinent to mention here that the AFU in September detected the case against an NGO M/s Health and Social Welfare Association (HASWA) in its involvement in importing medicines on fake documents and registered an FIR against the NGO.
Later, the authorities concerned of AFU-JIAP sent the case to the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I for legal proceedings. The Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I has conducted two hearings into the case among one the departmental representative of an NGO was not present while on the second hearing the DR submitted a written reply sought adjournment in the hearing.
The sources informed this scribe that the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I will fix the hearing into the case in the second week of December, 2014.
