AFU confiscates 88 smuggled smart phones valued Rs02m

ISLAMABAD: The Air Freight Unit (AFU) Islamabad impounded 88 costly smart phones worth Rs02million on 20th of February 2017. The above said seizure was intercepted at the passenger’s baggage Terminal.

According to details told by sources of Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) Islamabad that a passenger was coming from Dubai carrying the said numbers of non-duty paid smart phones. The baggage was intercepted and confiscated by the customs staff during the checking. A case was also registered against the smuggler of the consignment.

The man was coming from a foreign country by flight No: PK-786. The case has been forwarded to I&P Department for further investigation. It may be recalled that the customs staff disputed at the BBIA seized 2,247 numbers of mobile phones valued Rs32.89million during the FY2016-17 whereas Islamabad customs airport staff confiscated 2,997 numbers of mobile phones during the above said period of corresponding FY15-16 valued Rs63.20million.

Under new arrangements like installation of CCTV cameras and setup of body search counters at the BBIA, detection of smuggling of smart phones has become easy.
