BEIJING: Xing Junjun, an employee at the Beijing Capital Airport, was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 60,000 yuan ($9,114) for smuggling illegal animal parts by the Beijing High People’s Court recently, the Beijing Times reported.
Xing was entrusted by a woman, Cai Yirong, and one of his coworkers, Yan Yaqing, to smuggle a suitcase containing rhinoceros horn from South Africa past security in 2015.
However, airport security found his behavior suspicious and detained him. The suitcase was found to contain 2,260,000 yuan worth of rhinoceros horn. Xing was arrested the next day.
Cai and Yan were arrested at a later date. Cai was sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 110,000 yuan, while Yan was sentenced to six and a half years and fined 60,000 yuan.
