FRANCE: There is an alarming bee crisis around the world. As many as half the bees on the planet may have mysteriously vanished over the past two decades, costing farmers and crops a fortune.
But in downtown Austin there is hope for a hive high above the city, near the top of the Holiday Inn along the lake. Nearly 100,000 bees there may be relocated to a new life. It will take a daring rappel operation off the roof to get the job done.
“They are really everywhere,” said Tod Peddie, marketing director for the Holiday Inn. “If you look in your garden you see them buzzing around and people rarely get stung by honeybees.”
The bees taking refuge at the hotel are in a massive hive eleven stories up on the side of the building. There is no infestation, no guests stung, but there had been talk of exterminating them.
