HONG KONG: It is algae concentration that has given bluish color in Lake Tahoe, finds a research team from the University of California (UC), Davis. The low concentration of the algae is the reason behind the bluish color.
Researcher Shohei Watanabe came up with this finding by using a Blueness Index. From it, the researchers came to know that if there was less algal concentration then the lake appeared to be less blue.
It was earlier considered that the clarity of the water contributed to the bluish color. But the researchers have cleared that such is not the case and there is a need to manage algae concentrations and nutrient input.
Algal concentration depends on nitrogen and phosphorus level. A lot of money has been spent to prevent erosion and particles that lower the clarity. In the last three years, the color of the lake has improved. But as per researchers, work should be done to control algae nutrients entry in the lake.
It has been found that the lake’s color is not consistent throughout the year and there is an inverse proportionality going on. Sometimes, the lake seems to be clearer and less blue and other months, it comes to be deep bluish color.
