LAHORE: Accused Abdul Basit, who was arrested by the customs authorities at the Lahore airport for attempting to smuggle 15 kilogrammes of gold and foreign currency worth Rs 33.2 million, will be presented before the Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-smuggling today (Wednesday) as his physical remand ends.
Abdul Basit was nabbed by Model Customs Collectorate Preventive, and the court on Monday extended his physical remand for a day. However, due to a strike by the legal fraternity following the Daska incident, the case could not be heard.
Earlier, when the Customs Intelligence and Investigation officials presented him before the court, they asked for his eight-day physical remand for further interrogation. The investigation officer argued that during the investigation, a number of developments had been made, and it was necessary to investigate more from the accused. However, the Customs Court after listening to the arguments of the investigation team granted a one-day remand of the accused.
