LONDON: The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s most important carbon sinks. But scientists researching the forests say they’ve been surprised to discover that half of all the carbon stored there is held by only a handful of species.
The Amazon is really important to the global carbon cycle and it stores hundreds of billions of tons of carbon. And of course if something happens to that carbon, if the forests are destroyed, if they’re burned, a lot of that carbon gets turned into greenhouse gases, which makes global warming worse.
So people really care about what’s happening with the Amazon and they’re really interested to know where is that carbon being stored, in which species of trees and which kinds of trees, and that was really the goal of this study.
