ANF DG attends 51st session of sub-commission on drugs in S Arabia

ISLAMABAD: Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Director General Major General Nasir Dilawar Shah attended 51st Session of sub-commission on illicit drug trafficking and related matters in Middle East.

The Session of sub-commission organised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is an advisory forum to formulate draft regional policies, which are presented in upcoming meeting for Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).

Using this key podium, Pakistan has voiced its national stance, leading to adoption in regional standpoint, which will be presented in forthcoming session at Vienna, most likely to be held in March 2017, a message received here said. This forum also provided opportunity to discuss bilateral issues, individual concerns and national resolve between member states.

This year main agenda points of the meeting included strengthening cooperation and coordination against trafficking, current trends and modus operandi in trafficking in amphetamine-type stimulants, new psychoactive substances & pharmaceutical preparations, comprehensive & balanced drug-related policies, specific needs of children and youth to prevent drug abuse and need of criminal justice system for under-age drug offenders.

This sub-commission was established in 1973 and its meetings are held annually. There are 23 members of the Sub-commission including Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Iran and states from Middle East and Central Asia.

In addition to main objectives of the Sub-Commission i.e. to serve as a consultative body which provides the CND with a regional perspective on dealing with illicit drugs, it also facilitates cooperation and coordination in regional activities directed against illicit drug traffic and identifies priority issues and formulate recommendations to the Commission for addressing these issues.
