ISLAMABAD: The Model Customs Collectorate anti-smuggling staff has foiled an attempt to smuggle cell phones through a train, Khyber Mail, and seized 560 sets worth Rs 2 million.
Following information received through Islamabad Customs Collector Dr Arslan Subuctageen, the anti-smuggling squad raided Rawalpindi Railways Station. During the action, the staff intercepted two consignments with receipt No 7690223 and 769071 respectively, which were booked from Peshawar for Lahore. The official recovered different brands and models of phones, including Nokia, Samsung, etc. Officials claimed that all recovered phones are latest and costly, adding that the said consignments were booked through a courier service named DCS.
The officials further said that the raid was conducted without the assistance of any other law enforcement agency on the information of Collector Arslan Subuctageen, adding that an efficient information system has been established to keep an eye on the smugglers who used different ways to supply non-duty paid items in local markets.
Under the supervision of Superintendent Zargam Dil, the anti-smuggling staff comprising Deputy Superintendent Adnan Dar, Shakeel Rana, Matloob Husain Shah, Inspector Yousaf Mughal, Muhammad Asif, Driver Mukhtar and Aftab conducted a successful raid.
The FIR has been registered under the anti-smuggling act of customs and further investigation is under process by Investigation and Prosecution Department of Islamabad Customs.
In another operation under the supervision of Superintendent Zargam Dil, the staff seized contraband items including 8850kg of smuggled Indian gooseberry valued at Rs 3.9 million recovered from a Mazda truck near Kahuta Road.
The staff intercepted a truck bearing Registration No AJKA-9955, which was coming from Kashmir to Rawalpindi and recovered a huge quantity of gooseberry. The officials said that import of India origin gooseberry was prohibited into Pakistan.
Therefore, the team impounded the truck and recovered items, besides registering a case against the accused person.
