NEW YORK: Apple is letting some developers release updated versions of their apps with Apple Watch support enabled.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is restricting most developers from rolling out Apple Watch-friendly apps just yet. Those who have been approved so far were likely hand-picked to provide the best possible experience on Apple Watch.

The list of apps that now include Apple Watch support isn’t huge, but it does have some heavy-hitters on it, including CNN, Evernote, MLB.com At Bat, Target, and Twitter. You can, of course, download these updated apps right now, if they haven’t already auto-updated. But you won’t experience any of the new functionality without an Apple Watch.

Once we hit the Apple Watch launch date, Apple will add a dedicated category for Apple Watch-friendly apps within its Apple Watch app, which you should have received as part of Apple’s iOS 8.2 update. That does give the app a bit more usefulness than its current incarnation, which is basically just a publicity app for the Apple Watch that you can’t otherwise hide or delete off your device. If you buy an Apple Watch, this will be the app that you use in order to pair your smartwatch with your iPhone.
