CALIFORNIA: Earlier this week, Apple rolled out iOS 9.3.2 and the software update fixed a bug that caused phone calls made using Bluetooth on an iPhone SE to become distorted. Inadvertently, iOS 9.3.2 started bricking iPad Pro devices.
As a result, hundreds of complaints began to surface on forums and social media. As expected, many iOS users decided to voice their complaints to Apple’s @AppleSupport Twitter account:
Devices affected by the bug show a screen that indicates it should be plugged in to a computer and restored with iTunes. But connecting the devices to iTunes simply leads to a dialog box popping up that says the device cannot be restored due to an error (known as “Error 56″). And rebooting the devices returns it back to the same “bricked” state. On Apple’s support website, error 56 is described as a “hardware issue.” However, this problem became widespread only after the iOS 9.3.2 update was rolled out so it is definitely being caused by a software bug.
Apple has acknowledged the problem that causes iPad Pros to become unusable so that means a fix should be coming soon. Here is what Apple said in a statement via iMore:
“We’re looking into a small number of reports that some iPad units are receiving an error when updating the software. Those unable to restore their device through iTunes should contact Apple support.”
The bug seems to primarily affect the iPad Pro 9.7 rather than the iPad Pro 12.7. And the bug does seem to be affecting a “small number” of iOS users overall. I have seen a number of comments on the support forums from iPhone, iPad, iPod mini and iPad Pro users that said the iOS 9.3.2 update went smoothly for them.
Based on Apple’s previous action plans when bugs surface, the company will most likely release a new version of iOS 9.3.2 or provide a fix in iOS 9.3.3. And that fix will probably be rolled out by the end of next week. But for now, I would suggest postponing a software update if you have an iPad Pro.
